Scope note
A name of convenience for rugs that incorporate design elements common in Mamluk rugs such as rows of small trees and plants and Turkish rugs such as a large central medallion surrounded by four small medallions. Like Mamluk rugs they are asymmetrically knotted; however, they differ in using Z-twist wool rather than S-twist, the yarn is almost three times as thick, and they are dyed red with madder instead of lac.
